Why do so many adults fall for these questions?
Most of these questions aren’t hard – they’re sneaky. They trigger our fast, intuitive thinking, which serves up an answer in a split second. Psychologist Daniel Kahneman calls it “System 1”. The right answer needs the slow, checking “System 2”.
The most famous example: bat and ball
A bat and a ball cost $1.10 in total. The bat costs $1.00 more than the ball. Almost everyone instantly thinks “10 cents” – but then the bat would cost $1.10 and both together $1.20. The right answer is 5 cents. The question comes from the “Cognitive Reflection Test” and has been given to thousands of students – about half of them got it wrong, even at elite universities.
Order of operations – trap number 1
